Senior Art Director

Location: Houston, Texas


Hart Energy ranks among the leading providers of news, data, and events for the global energy industry, including the flagship Oil and Gas Investor Magazine.


The Senior Art Director is an experienced designer responsible for the art design, layout, illustrations, graphics and more for the recently redesigned, 41-year-old Oil and Gas Investor Magazine and its companion online brand that reside on hartenergy.com. This individual heads up the monthly design, production and coordination of the magazine and it's digital companion with the leading news and content editors. The director also contributes to art and graphics for HartEnergy.com's broader news coverage.

The Art Director reports to the Editorial Director and maintains the Oil and Gas Investor brand, hires and contracts with freelance photographers and, ideally, has professional experience with photography and the production of original illustrations and artwork.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Work closely with the magazine Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor on the planning, scheduling and layout of the monthly magazine and weekly digital content.
  • Collaborate with the creative department on magazine planning and design.
  • Organize supplement special issues, such as Forty Under 40 and Women in Energy, including photography sessions.
  • Work on setting and meeting magazine deadlines with the editorial, marketing and sales/advertising teams, including getting the issues promptly to the publishers.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (BA or BS) in the relevant fields of study.
  • Preferred minimum of three to five years of design, art direction or magazine experience.
  • Preferred experience in photography and creating original art, illustrations and graphics.
  • Collaboration, teamwork and advanced planning are critical to putting together the industry-leading magazine.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously, meet deadlines and handle work-related stress.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may sometimes include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain a professional atmosphere for employees, clients and customers.
  • Some knowledge of the energy sector is considered a plus.
